HR Methods to Improve Employee Performance

August 14th, 2018

Employee performance has been a long battle that many Human resource personnel have struggled with over the years. When it comes to improving employee performance, human resource must make it a priority. You can’t expect your employees to be on top of their game all the time, but you can whip them into shape when the motivation becomes slack. Staying on top of your employees is critical in order to get the most out of them, but you can hound them until they lose all motivation at all. As the human resource personnel, it is your job to keep the employees motivated and the performance level up. Here are some ways to do this more effectively.

Establish a Purpose

Your employees are well aware of their job and what the company does, but do you make a point to let them know what the company’s overall purpose is? Your employees need a reason to believe in the company. With more and more millennials entering the workforce, you are going to see an increase in the employee’s desire to understand the company’s purpose. Sure, they are after a salary with the company, but they also want to believe that they are making a difference. This is one of the biggest reasons employees choose to work for a company. It is also one of the biggest reasons they remain with a company longer.

Your employees need to see that you care about them. Yes, raises are good and can motivate your employees temporarily, but they need to see you have a vested interest in them. The way to do this is by communicating openly with them. By being transparent with your employees it can help them see that you are open with them and care about how they feel about things. Communication meetings should take place at least quarterly. Even if there are no new happenings, it gives the employees a platform to ask questions and voice their concerns. You can’t expect them to be content all the time. There are going to be times when they are discontent with something and want to voice their concern. You have to be prepared to handle it in a professional manner that doesn’t upset them more.

Promote from Within

Your employees have a vested interest in the company. They work hard day in and day out and want to see that you notice it. The best way to reward them for the work they do is by promoting them. Rather than looking outside the company to hire for positions, your best resources are right within the company. They know how the company operates so the training does not have to be as intense as if you brought a stranger in. Giving your employees the opportunity to advance their skills and become leaders within the organization is by far one of the best ways to improve employee performance. If they feel there is a chance they could be promoted, they are much more likely to work harder for you.

Make it Fun

While work is very important and should be taken seriously, you still want your employees to enjoy coming to work. Changing things up periodically and offering fun activities can be a great way to improve employee performance. Ice cream socials during lunchtime or a fun summer bash for the employees and their families can be a great way to get your employees back to enjoying their job once again. You have to be able to listen to your employees and see what is causing them stress and strife. They are the best at letting you know what is going to help improve their performance.
